Holy moly, it’s already 4 and half months into 2023, and the year feels like it is speeding by.
Maybe it’s the war in Ukraine, the rise of AI, or that the world is just full of douche-flutes and we all are vibing to our own beat.

That’s what I’m going with.

Since I have been sharing loads of tunes before, I thought I would pop up a few new tunes that I have been listening to, so that you can add them to your collection.

As you may know, I am a lover of all music (even the fat songs), and I don’t discriminate when it comes to the sounds that make me boogey.

Here are some of the top NEW songs that have been earworms in my 2023 experience, in a post I call Mid Ape Tuneage.

Champ-Portugal the Man ft Edgar Winter

I’m going to go on a limb and say that Portugal the Man are the coolest band to ever come out of Wasilla, Alaska. Fight me then.

PtM have been laying down some wicked cool tracks over the past few years, from albums like ‘Woodstock’, ‘Evil Friends’ and ‘American Ghetto’ their style has evolved almost as much as technology has in that time.

On this new single ‘Champ’, the band incorporates some heavy rock icons, looping in the eternally white Edgar Winter as well as rock band War.

The song is a fantastic rock and indie melange to kick into the spring of 2023.

Dancing in the Moonlight-Messmaker

If you’re a new band looking to make your mark, one of the best way to get attention is to do a cover of an iconic song.

‘Dancing in the Moonlight’ was originally written by Sherman Kelly after taking a vicious beating from a gang.
His band Boffalongo recorded the song in the late 60s’ before being sampled by the likes of King Harvest and Toploader.

Messmaker is a young band from Ohio, who have done their own take on this classic.

Modern Days-The Kooks

The boys from Brighton are back with another chart-topper with their 2023 release ‘Modern Days’ from the album ’10 Tracks to Echo in the Dark.’

Since busting a load on our ear drums in 2006, The Kooks have delivered some great tracks and albums that tap into an indie, post-punk, British invasion tone.

Modern Days is another potential classic to add to their library.

Oceans Niagara-M83

This French electronic group has been in our pants since the late 90s’, and have continued to evolve their musical style.

‘Fantasy’ is their 9th studio album, and has some real corkers in it to get you dancing and shaking.

Oceans Niagara is a fluid and techno trip song that is perfect driving song, and one that will find it’s way onto movie soundtracks soon.

It’s amazing that men over 40 can create music, as mainstream media would lead us to believe that these people are all bigots and unable to adapt.

Funny that.

‘The Love Still Held Me Near’-City and Colour

Of course I have to throw a Canadian artist into the mix, as this St. Catherine’s, Ontario musician has been in the mix for a while now.

Otherwise known as Dallas Green, ‘City and Colour’ have been busting out Green’s unique voice and sound since he left his previous band Alexisonfire.

On his new album ‘The Love that Held me Near’, Green delivers a powerful and operatic ballad hooks you in from the start.

Go on, give this Canuck a listen to!

Dummy-Portugal the Man

You big Dummy! You’re one of my fave songs of 2023 thus far.

Sure, I stuck Portugal the Man in there twice, because they rock the hell out of this song.

A totally unique and pumpy song that is backed by a truly odd video to accompany it.
Once this song gets stuck in your head, you will need an exorcist to draw it out.
That’s a good thing btw.

Get a fix on the dummy!

That’s it for some of my top tunes for April 2023, I promise I will be updating this site more and more now.
